Kids' Room

Well Scott and I didn't watch the Superbowl last Sunday. This is no big surprise. We were missing the Superbowl goodies however. Scott was really wanting some chicken wings and I wanted some brownies. We had nothing! Scott comes up with really good food ideas (I say sarcastically). With our drought of junk food Scott decided to cook himself a baked potato and load half of it with butter and cinnamon and sugar and the other half with honey. Gross! He ate the whole thing.

On Monday my parents came into town for four days. My dad had meetings the whole time and I didn't see him once. My mom came over to my house for a few hours on Monday afternoon. We later met up with the whole family and ate dinner at Pizza Hut. Everyone went to my parent's hotel and went swimming afterward but I decided that my kids were too sick to go into cold hotel pool water.

On Wednesday we had another family get together at Gabe's. We had a potluck dinner and all the food was great. I especially enjoyed Katie's caramel popcorn that I nearly finished off all by myself. I love caramel popcorn!

On Friday I invited Katrina to come over for a special dinner since she babysat for free for us while we went to the temple. I made Cafe Rio pork salads for dinner. I made everything from scratch homemade from the salad dressing to the tortillas. It was delicious. Totally worth it? I'm not so sure.

I finished my kids' bedroom. It's all done. Scott needs to build bunk beds and then we will be all the way finished. I think it turned out well. I feel like I did a lot without spending very much money. Before I tried to have a girls side and a boys side. Now I am just doing all bright colors. Girl colors and boy colors.

We didn't have the crib up for long but you can see the wall decorations that I had up.

I later added the pom poms and wreath that I made. Those took forever and I love them but they did not go anymore.

This is now. This wall looks empty now but someday soon (I hope) it will be covered up by a bunk bed. Gabby has a matching purple polka dot bedspread.

I recovered their letters with new paper. I took the bean bag and took out all the stuffing and now it stores all the kids' stuffed animals. I bought those baskets from the dollar store. I previously mod podged fabric onto the book shelf. I bought frames from the dollar store and spray painted them with paint I already had.

I took that frame from Chase's reception and spray painted it yellow and put pictures of my kids in it. This wall used to be completely covered with scripture pictures.

Scott still wanted a scripture wall and so did I (so did the kids, they love scripture story time with Scott).

I made fabric banners and the drapes.

This will eventually be Piper's bed. I spray painted the bed frame turquoise and appliqued fabric circles onto the bedspread to girly it up a bit. I recovered the pillow.

I bought a coat rack so the kids could hang up their own coats. I bought those baskets from the dollar store to separate their shoes. (Don't mind how overflowed Corbin's is, I really need to junk some of those).

Scott's "sweet potato"

Homemade Cafe Rio. Yummy!

Gabby:"I like Corbin...he's cute." Ha. I made that dress for Gabby years ago. She can finally fit into it.

Corbin and Gabby built a fort and then wanted to watch a Sunday show.

Piper's almost 18 months. (Still no walking or talking). Hmmm. She does not fail to communicate however. That girl knows what she wants!

Colorado Springs, Strep Throat, and More Strep Throat

This week I went and visited my good friends Scot and Jenny. I spent Monday getting things ready to go. I made several dinners and snacks for the family to eat while I was gone. I woke up bright and early to make it to my 6:50 plane out of Boise. Jenny came and picked me up and we went into downtown Denver to shop and eat. We had lunch at Cherry Cricket which was featured on the show Man Vs. Food. It was yummy. After that we shopped some more and then went and picked up Scot from work. I was exhausted by that point and needed a good nap when we got home as I had gotten hardly any sleep between nerves, Gabby, and Piper being up multiple times that night. We just hung out and talked and watched some TV that night.

On Wednesday I woke up with a sore throat. I decided it would be fun to go to IKEA that day because I am working on redecorating my kids' room and need ideas. Plus I like that store. As we were getting ready to go I just felt really run down and my body hurt. Plus my throat was hurting and I was getting a headache. I still felt like I wanted to go so I popped some pain pills and we went. I found a table cloth there that I bought and made a bedspread for Piper and curtains for the kids' room out of it. That is a good deal right there. That was a great way to buy a lot of fabric for a good price. Score! The bedspread is feeling a bit masculine for me however so my friend Jenny gave me the idea to applique' other fabric onto it. Brilliant! I will see what I can do. My sewing machine frustrates me to no end and I wonder in its ability to do this as it seems to not be able to stitch anything properly. Grrr. Anyway I am almost done with the kids' room. Now I just need to wait for Scott to build the bunk beds.

Back to Wednesday. We went to lunch at Chick-Fil-A and there was a short and curly hair in Jenny's fries. Gross! That was some good times I tell you. This happens to her all the time. By the time we got back from IKEA it was nearly 3:00 and I was feeling pretty tired and my body was hurting. I took more pills and spent the next 3 hours watching HGTV (home and garden television). If I had this channel I would never get anything done, I would want to watch it all day. After dinner we went to Target and Dairy Queen as the DQ was a big tradition for Jenny and I. That night I had a fever and tried to sleep without swallowing.

On Thursday I decided I had better go to Urgent Care. An hour and a half later  I found out I had strep throat. In a way I was glad because then I could get some antibiotics and kill that sucker. We didn't do much the rest of the day. I sewed my banners for my kids' room and we just hung out. Talk about bad timing to get sick. I was a pretty lame guest to be sure. I still had a great time and really in a way it was relaxing to be sick at Scot and Jenny's because I could just sit on the couch for hours at a time without interruption and when can a mom do that?

I love Scot and Jenny. They are my favorite. I'm so glad they let me come and stay with them and they are still as awesome as ever. Jenny has the cleanest most organized house ever. I want to be like her.

I love Scott for being the kind of husband that happily lets me leave him with 3 children for 3 days. He is the best!

My kids have been sick on and off for 2 months now. This is uncanny for us. Usually they get a cold or two and that is it. It's been pretty annoying for everyone. I was wondering off and on if we needed to take the kids to the doctor but I never felt like they were sick enough. When Scott came and picked me up from the airport all three of them sounded terrible. I had Scott take the kids to the doctor on Friday and Gabby came back with a positive on having strep throat. They figured Corbin would have it too so they gave them both a prescription for antibiotics. Poor Piper has to tough it out if she gets it as our doctor thinks she is too young. Although Corbin went on antibiotics when he was 2 weeks old so I don't get it. I feel especially bad for Gabby because she has been the sickest the whole time and she had a nasty cough on top of strep. I can't even imagine. I felt like I was being stabbed in the throat every time I swallowed so to have to cough would be pure misery. Piper has definitely taken a turn for the worse and she was up several times in the night and has been a sad baby today.

I'm also glad to have gotten strep throat because to my memory I have never gotten it before. I couldn't believe how much it hurt my whole body and now I have much more empathy when  people tell me they or their children have gotten strep. Boo to strep. Okay well that is all!

We were in the mall and passed Godiva and saw those chocolate dipped strawberries. Jenny asked for 6 and the teller said that would be $7 a piece. Say what! She reduced the number to 3. Wow it's like they were dipped in gold or something. We definitely needed to take a picture to remember the ridiculously overpriced morsel.

Scott took the kitties to Pet-co while I was gone. Good daddy. They loved it!

Daddy cuddle time.

Tempe, Texas, Temple

One of my friends who I used to teach in Young Women's is home for the semester, so she and a couple of other guys from the ward have been coming over and playing Sunday night games again. That is fun. She decided to go on a mission and she is going to Tempe, AZ. I love it down there. I am excited for her, although I will miss her. She's kind of like a little sister to me.

On Monday night we had a girls night and it was fun. We played games for most of it this time. The rest of the week was pretty much same old same old. I was a little more lazy in my preschool this week. I need to get back on track next week. It's hard to be awesome all the time. Ha!

Scott went to Texas this week. I had Katrina come over that night to hang out with me and so I could practice braiding on her hair. I need to learn some skills and my girls have far too little to practice on at this point. Hopefully some day I can fix it cute.

On Friday night we had ward temple night. The temple was so busy it was insane! I couldn't believe it. I think it's a popular date night thing to do. Seesh! It was craziness I tell you. Our ward's 6:30 session time got pushed back to 7:00 so a big group of us did sealings. It was pretty cool to do a sealing session with 10 other couples from our ward. Afterwards we went and had rootbeer floats at a ward members house.

On Saturday I worked really hard all day and finally stopped working and did almost nothing after 6:00. I was pretty exhausted by that point. I get to go visit my friends Scot and Jenny in Colorado next week. I am very excited. I can't wait! I love them. Jenny was my roommate for years and Scot dated Jenny for years so the three of us hung out a lot. I think we will be doing some serious crafting and television watching which is some of our favorite things to do.

Other than that I can't wait for February because we have been out of grocery money for 3 weeks. Luckily I stock up so we have been fine but really I can't wait. I hate not being able to go to the grocery store. I am feeling a need for some new recipes and some serious fresh fruit and veggies. I just need to figure out some sort of meals to throw into the freezer so my family can eat something while I am gone. Desperate times I tell you!

Baby it's Cold Outside

This is the coldest winter in Boise we've ever experienced. I feel like I'm in Arco, but I know I'm not because if it's this cold in Boise I know it's much colder in Arco and it is. My mom said that last week it was -20 and it was blowing. She thought they were going to cancel church but they didn't. Our lows have been in the single digits around here with highs in the teens.

I've been doing lots of preschool activities with the kids. I feel an urgency to teach Corbin especially as much as he and I can stand. I feel like Kindergarten is going to be here in a blink of an eye. I want him to be at least where he needs to be but preferably ahead. Corbin doesn't love it and I have to make him color or write his name, etc whereas Gabby loves doing it. She wants to go over her flashcards everyday. She almost knows all of her numbers up to 12. I'm trying to look at everyday things as learning activities. Corbin helped me make sugar cookies and I thought that cutting out the shapes was a great art activity and dying the frosting was a great science lesson. Eating it is a good health lesson (on what not to eat). Ha. Anyway I'm trying to do better and be better in this aspect. It is a learning process for sure. I have a long way to go but I have made some progress in this area.

On Wednesday Corbin wanted to go on a walk with me. He had mentioned it the day before so I knew he wanted to. Scott was home so I put the girls down for a nap and he and I went on a winter adventure. It was about 20 degrees. Brrr. I don't like the cold. It was fun though we went on a mile walk with a pit stop at the park where Corbin played with the ice chunks. When we got home he jumped in the bath and I had some hot chocolate. Like I said, brrr, It was cute though. I don't want my adorable boy to grow up. I just love him!

I got an idea in my head about redecorating my kids' room and now I really want to. The problem is we are completely out of money this month so I can't even get started. The other problem is we need to get bunk beds which will be expensive for us. I have been looking on Craigslist and the thrift stores. Scott may make them. We will see. I hate waiting for things! AHHH! Anyway it will be a long process and that is life, but someday in the next few months I hope to be all finished. We will see, this bunk bed situation...hmmm.

Musical numbers. Stop the music and they call out the number. (Pinterest).

Corbin designed his alien.

Gabby wanted a caterpillar.

Corbin reminded me that I forgot to put sprinkles on his birthday cake (which he had been talking about for months). He was sad when he saw sprinkles in the cupboard, but was happy that we could make orange sugar cookies with sprinkles.

Before out winter adventure.

Corbin kept stopping and laying down on the way. Silly boy. That is cold!

Piper playing peek-a- boo while eating spaghetti. Brilliant!

I didn't have any Valentine decorations and I decided I wanted some. I may be jumping the gun but if you are going to go through the effort to make and put up decorations you might as well have them up for awhile. I just put some paper on the LOVE letters. I up cycled the red frame at Christmas,( I had an advent calendar hanging on it), I found a wooden heart at a thrift store for a dollar and covered it in red circles from napkins. I'm obsessed with doing the cutting out millions of circles or flowers and hot gluing them but I continue to love it so whatever. I"m a bit of a one trick pony for sure.

Sunday nap.

Snowmen, Indoor Park, PoJos

We have lived in Boise for 5 years and this is the first Boise winter that actually feels and looks like winter to me. They even had a snow day last week for several inches of snow. Although when Scott talked to his dad in Salt Lake he had been shoveling snow for the last 5 hours. They had received 18 inches of snow and school wasn't canceled down there. That's pretty hilarious to me. I think it snowed one day last winter. It snowed a lot but by the end of the day it was already melting and it was competently gone the next day. So it's been kind of nice to have the snow stick around. It's so much prettier that way. I am already looking forward to spring however. Loading my kids up in their coats is super duper annoying to me.

One day when it was beautifully snowing I said to my kids, "look at the snow, it's so beautiful." Which Corbin responded back "you go play in it." Ha. Turns out neither of us wanted to go play in the snow. My kids won't play in the snow unless I play with them and I don't want to. One day it was pretty mild outside and the snow was perfect for snowman building so I forced myself to go out with the kids and build a snowman. I find that with parenting you have to do a lot of things you don't want to do and it's good for you. It really teaches you to gird up your loins and suck it up if you will.

Scott got called as the Elder's Quorum President. I think I may have underestimated how much time this would take. He was the first counselor for years so I thought I had a pretty good idea. I was wrong. Being the President takes up a lot more time. This will be a bit of an adjustment for sure.

The indoor park finally opened up at the Boise Friends church. It's about time. They used to open up a few days a week for a few hours from November until March. This year they didn't open up until last week. I have missed them. I'm sad they have seriously cut back on how long they stay open. We were all happy to go and play and we will be going there at least  once a week I'm sure.

On Friday Scott went on the Elders Quorum overnight camp out. One of the "widows" invited me over for dinner along with another "widow." We had fun and the food was fantastic. On Saturday we went to a birthday party at PoJos. My kids had so much fun, especially Corbin. I wasn't sure how it would go having all three kids by myself at PoJos for 2 hours, but it went well. I have found that when Gabby is a in a happy and independent mood it makes ALL the difference. Scott got home around 4:00 Saturday afternoon.

Corbin gave a talk today in church and he did a GREAT job. We have been working on his talk all week. I'm so glad it's done. I made him memorize it. We practiced it 10 times everyday and yesterday we practiced 20 times. This is a lot for a 5 year old, but he did it. I'm so glad I had a weeks notice so we could prepare. I hate when they only give me a day. I think it's really good learning opportunity. I think it teaches that we spend time preparing for our talks. I also think it's a great excuse to learn to memorize which is a great skill. I'm glad it's done though because it was pretty annoying to execute.
The kids watching the Joseph Smith movie with Scott after Sunday dinner. (Don't mind the Valentine decor in the background. It is a work in progress).
Family cuddle!

Last Sunday after dinner we played a family game of Cranium. It was fun!

Gabby refused to let me put on her snow gear. She thought her backwards ballerina costume would be sufficient. I thought it would be a great lesson on natural consequences. As soon as she opened the door she changed her mind and let me get her dressed.

Corbin wanted to plant his clementine seeds. I figured I needed to take a picture of my kids playing in the snow since they never do.

Indoor park!

Piper immediately picked up this doll and starting hugging it. It was pretty cute.

Bowling at PoJos.

Bumper Cars.

Carousel

Our snowmen.

Turn up the volume. He did a better job in Primary. He did it with very little help. Good job Coribn!

New Year's Eve Party and Gabby's Song

I decided very last minute to throw a New Year's Eve party. I had been thinking about it a little bit and told my friend. She called me on Sunday night and asked me if I was doing it and I decided to do it. I sent out a message to some friends on facebook. 2 couples came along and my friend Lisa who came alone. It was actually a perfect number of people to play games and that's what we did all night. It was a blast. We started out eating food and playing an enpromto game of "name that song" from Scott's super old school Rockin' New Year's Eve playlist. We had prizes of leftover wedding candy. After that we played group Pictionary on Corbin's big drawing easel. Then a round of catch phrase. We finished out the night playing several hours of Tripoly. It was a great time and I'm glad there were a few people without plans that came on over. I spent all day making decorations because I am a bit of spaz and when I get on a kick with something I can't get enough.

New Year's Day was pretty lazy. Most of us were still in our pajamas at 1:00. Scott and I watched an episode of Firefly in the middle of the day. That's what made it feel like a holiday the most. That night we just snagged a pizza from Little Caesars.

The rest of the week I have been trying to get everyone back on track and on routine. I am definitely still in staying up late, sleeping in late, and eating junk food mode. I think things will be much more on track next week. My major goals right now are with my kids. I really want to put a lot of focus on Corbin's preschool work. I also need to continue to work with and encourage Piper to walk and talk as she is doing neither.

Countdown to the New Year. Someone popped the balloon every hour on down to midnight. I should have had a prize or something to go with it but I didn't get that far. I planned this party in less than a day.

My friend Lisa beating us all at Tripoly. She doesn't have a competitive bone in her body and she had no idea what she was doing. This tends to make competitive people like myself crazy. Although I was not in a competitive mood so I didn't care. It is funny though. She is like this when we are playing games all the time!
Per Aunt Carole's request we made a video of Gabby singing the song "Master the Tempest is Raging." It's pretty precious.

Look at the blog post below to watch a slideshow of Corbin's first 5 years.
